Attorney Villy Lopman in Äripäev: “Should falsely interpreting tax laws be punishable?”

Villy Lopman, attorney at RASK Attorneys-at-Law, wrote about tax-related “dissidence” that might result in punishment in the opinions column of Äripäev on 17 December.

Villy opines that taxpayers that interpret tax laws from their own perspective should consider the possibility that the view entertained by the state often differs from theirs and the situation may prove risky.

Villy emphasises that, “ignorance of tax legislation does not free us from paying taxes or from liability for a breach of these laws. The above is, however, only valid when taxpayers are able to understand these laws. In this effect, no one is obliged to organise their activity in a way that involves a high tax burden.”
